With Frank Doorhof, international fashion and glamour photographer, it is all about being creative and getting the shot. In this class, Frank uses amazing dancers as models to teach you everything from the technical aspects of how to use a light meter to the artistic aspects of creating interesting images with unique looks that make the most of your locations. Frank starts on location in two different settings then brings you back to the desktop to share some of his favorite post-processing techniques while working on the photos he’s just created.

  1. Arranging Locations and Models (16:16) Whether you are working alone or with a producer, there's a lot of work that goes into arranging the location and models for your shoot.
  2. Coaching Your Model (04:49) Continuous communication between you and your model is critical to the success of your shoot.
  3. The Importance of a Light Meter (06:44) Using a light meter takes the guess work out of your exposure.
  4. Adding a Strobe (07:02) Building on the work from the previous lessons, Frank adds in a strobe for controlled lighting.
  5. Modifying Light with a Grid (04:36) Light modifiers like a grid spot can help you control your light and get more creative.
  6. Cross Lights (08:34) Changing things up with a cross light setup opens new doors to creativity.
  7. Backlit with Color (10:40) Adding new elements to your lighting setup and scene allows you to create more unique images.
  8. Stopping Motion (14:12) Incorporating a sense of movement in your shots adds life to your images.
  9. Adding Drama (06:38) Photos can look more dramatic through the addition of another light as well as new props.
  10. Up Another Notch (11:06) Building on the lighting setup from the previous lesson, Frank takes the image to new heights.
  11. Switching to a Male Model (10:08) Many of these same techniques work just as well with male models as they do with the female dancers.
  12. Working in Photoshop (16:02) With the shooting done Frank sits down with his photos and Photoshop to go through his workflow.
  13. Getting a Really Different Look (13:31) Starting in Camera Raw, Frank moves to Photoshop for some clean up work before heading into Nik filters to create a really unique look.
  14. Blood on the Shoes (10:15) When you have a vision in mind before you shoot, you can work to realize that vision while you are shooting and then bring it all together in post-processing.
  15. Make it a Little More Artistic (08:24) Developing your photos is also your opportunity to emphasize your own unique style that helps you stand out from the crowd.

As always, top notch! I would second the idea of sitting when shooting. I am a very fit person and have done several marathons, but nothing is as hard on the back and the knees as shooting when crouching or kneeling! Folks, save your body! Follow Frank's suggestion!
  2. Hi Frank, firstly thank you for this. It is always great to see how your work and techniques are always evolving and advancing. I learned a great deal from this series and it has motivated me to get shooting again in a more creative fashion. Having had the pleasure of a 2 day one on one workshop with you a couple of years ago it was interesting to compare with internet learning. My conclusion is that for me, I felt like I was back listening to you in studio and I managed to grasp everything you did and said, maybe as I could advance at my own pace---there was less time pressure.
  3. Excellent class. Frank reveals many useful tips for enhancing a photo shoot. The tips are reasonably simple to implement yet lead to very powerful and unique results. I highly recommend this class to anyone looking to add creativity to their photo shoots.

  5. I love this guy! He certainly takes his time and is super thorough in his instruction. He is certainly one of my favorite instructors. Also I really appreciate the fact that he shoots in Medium Format and explains the similarities and differences between his equipment choices. That really helps me as a budding photographer.
  6. Excellent tutorial Frank, you might have outdone yourself this time! Thanks for all of your training & help.

Thanks for this very interesting course. I really appreciate the way Frank and his team build up from the preparations before a shoot until the moment just before pushing the print button in a very clear and understandable way! This gives me the opportunity to learn about the whole cyclus ad just try it myself to learn and improve my own skills. Cheers Stefan

I may be bias, but I freaking love all of Frank's videos. This one certainly did not let me down. Frank is a fantastic instructor. In addition his articles in Light It Magazine are excellent.

That's an amazing class, by far the best class given by Frank (and I watched all of them). The way he presents and explains it makes it easy even for beginners to understand. The lighting setups look great and the techniques used are varied which broadens the students view. I certainly had a lot of fun watching it and learned a lot from it, too. Some of the high lights are: the work with dancers and flour which made for a very cool effect, as well as the effect using smoke to give atmosphere to the ballerina setup. Beautiful images, wonderful class! It's clear that you guys put a lot of work into it and it certainly paid off.
